Privacy Policy

Short version: DockClick is sold through Setapp and contains the Setapp framework, which checks your license and reports usage to Setapp. Apart from that, DockClick has no analytics, no advertising and no accounts, and it does not send the developer your name, email address, payment details or file names. This policy explains in detail what is processed, on which legal basis, and what your rights are.

1. Data controller

The controller responsible for the app DockClick and this website within the meaning of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:

2. Scope

This policy covers the DockClick macOS application and this website (mr-mandelbrot.github.io/DockIntercept). Purchasing is handled by Setapp, which acts as an independent data controller under its own privacy policy (see section 5). The Setapp framework inside the app is described in section 6.

3. Data processed by the app

The developer’s own code in DockClick contains no analytics, telemetry, advertising, crash reporting or user accounts, and it sends no data to the developer. The app also contains the Setapp framework, which connects to Setapp; see section 6.

To provide its functionality, the app processes the following information locally on your device:

Dock and file information — via the macOS Accessibility permission, the app reads which Dock item you right-clicked and the names and paths of files shown in Dock Stacks, solely to display its context menu and execute the action you choose (e.g. Open with, Show in Finder, Move to Trash). DockClick does not send this information anywhere and does not store it, except in the diagnostic log when Debug logs are switched on.
Settings — your preferences (e.g. menu enabled, launch at login, Stack search paths) are stored locally in the app’s preferences on your Mac. You can delete them at any time by removing the app and its preference file.
Diagnostic log — DockClick writes a log to ~/Library/Logs/DockClick/ on your Mac, at most about 4 MB plus one older copy. It records technical events such as a menu opening or closing. It contains file names and paths only if you switch on Debug logs in Settings. The log is never uploaded; you can choose to send it to the developer when asking for support.

Because this processing happens on your device and is not disclosed to the developer, the developer has no access to it. To the extent a legal basis is required, it is the performance of the license agreement with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

4. Permissions

Accessibility (on macOS 27 and later: Device Control and Data Access) — required for the app’s core function: detecting right-clicks on Dock items, reading the clicked item’s name and path, handling clicks while a DockClick menu is open, and closing the Stack after an action. Used only locally. You grant this permission in System Settings and can revoke it there at any time.
Files and Folders — macOS asks once for access to Downloads during setup, because it is the folder DockClick searches by default, and for other folders such as Desktop or Documents the first time you right-click a file there or add the folder in Settings.
Automation (Finder) — asked shortly after your first DockClick menu closes, as long as Get Info is in the menu. Get Info is handed to Finder, and DockClick sends Finder one harmless request after a menu closes so that Get Info opens quickly.

5. Purchasing via Setapp

DockClick is sold on the Setapp marketplace. When you purchase or install the app through Setapp, your Setapp account, payment and billing data are processed in accordance with the Setapp Privacy Policy. Please review the policy carefully. The developer does not receive your payment details.

6. The Setapp framework in the app

DockClick contains the Setapp framework, which Setapp uses to license the apps it distributes. The framework checks your license and reports usage to Setapp, so a firewall will show DockClick connecting to Setapp’s servers. According to the privacy declaration Setapp ships with the framework, it collects product interaction data (for app functionality and analytics), a device identifier and a user identifier (for app functionality), linked to your Setapp account and not used for tracking. This data is processed in accordance with the Setapp Privacy Policy.

7. Support by email

If you contact max@marquart.dev, the developer processes your email address, name (if provided), and the content of your message solely to answer your request. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your request relates to your license, otherwise our legitimate interest in responding to inquiries (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Support emails are deleted once the request is resolved, unless statutory retention obligations require longer storage.

8. This website

This site is hosted on GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc., USA). When you visit it, GitHub automatically processes technical server-log data such as your IP address, browser type, and time of access to deliver the site securely, as described in the GitHub Privacy Statement. GitHub, Inc. is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Legal basis: legitimate interest in providing this website securely and efficiently (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). This site itself sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and embeds no third-party trackers.

9. Data sharing

The developer does not sell, rent, or share personal data. What the Setapp framework reports goes to Setapp, as described in section 6.

10. Data retention

Apart from what the Setapp framework reports to Setapp, the app stores data only on your device (settings and the diagnostic log). Support emails are retained only as long as needed to handle your request (see section 7). Server logs of this website are retained by GitHub under its own policy.

11. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20), and objection to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). To exercise your rights, contact max@marquart.dev. Note that for app usage there is usually nothing to disclose or delete on the developer’s side, as the developer receives no app data; for purchase, license and usage data processed by Setapp, please contact Setapp.

12. Children

DockClick is not directed at children.

13. Changes to this policy

If the app’s data practices ever change (for example, if a future update introduces optional crash reporting), this policy will be updated before such a change takes effect, and the date above will reflect the revision.
